Admissions

Prospective Families

Below are the most common questions we have been asked and have answered for a multitude of families who have chosen our world language programming for their children.

How can I enroll my child into The Socratic School of Language?

Enrollment at The Socratic School of Language is simple and is on a first come, first served basis or by use of a waitlist. If there are seats available, parents will be able to enroll their child. We do not hold lotteries, but we do have a waitlist for our program, which is $150.00 per entry on the list and lasts for one year.

Contact us to schedule a time for you and your child to visit our school. We will be happy to answer any questions that you may have. During your visit, you will have the opportunity to meet us and learn more about what we have to offer. This time spent gives all involved an opportunity to get to know one another and to make sure that all personalities mix well, which is important and helps to ensure that all parties are comfortable with their surroundings and expectations.

After an onsite visit, the registration process may begin. There are various forms to be read and completed. Once forms are read, completed, signed, and the deposit has been paid, your child's space will be reserved and the final step is to decide on a start date.

How large are classes at The Socratic School of Language?

Our program accepts only small groups of children into each class, which allots for smaller teacher-child ratios of 1:4/1:5.  We also have separate classrooms at our location, which are perfect for socially-distanced learning.

How are classes taught at The Socratic School of Language?

The program uses a rotating schedule with transitions between the blackboard, tables, and floor to teach all the daily routines and children are taught together. We do not separate children into age groups, as we have found that children learn best from each other when they are of varied age and classroom leadership naturally blossoms when all the students are not the same age.

The target language is spoken 100% of the children's learning time.

We only speak English at home. Will learning another language hurt my child or prevent my child from communicating in English?

This concern is common among most families that are English speaking, but rest assured that children who are from English-speaking households or households where at least one parent speaks a language other than English, typically learn more vocabulary and perform better in school when exposed to at least one other language at an early age. This can even be true for children who have a language delay.

Via the Internet, there is much scientific research supporting children's language acquisition at an early age and the gains we have seen in our program are real proof that this research is correct. If you would like to learn more about this topic, you are encouraged to reach out to us, so that we can tell you more and invite you to a tour of our program!

Is STEM apart of your program?

Yes, indeed! The Socratic School of Language will support the childrens' quantitative reasoning with technology, math, and science-related activities where they will experience learning with diverse mediums. We use MacMillan Science Early Activities and the Core Knowledge sequence-based curriculum as the basis for our curriculum.

What are qualifications for staff?

Though The Socratic School of Language is small, we have BIG requirements for ALL of our staff, which are:

·An Early Childhood Education/Psychology/Teaching/Music background that includes, but is not limited to working towards or having acquired a college or graduate level degree, or CDA

·Leadership and ability to engage in both academic and play activities with the children at all times

How does your school handle COVID-19?

Since the pandemic, our school has been fortunate as to have 0 COVID-19 cases involving our staff, teachers, parents, or children on our premises and we have employed strict policies that lessen the likelihood of students and teachers becoming ill.  Our premises are also restricted to only our staff, teachers, and students and may require temperature checks for visitation for any reason.

What calendar does The Socratic School of Language operate on?

We are open year-round, but we close on traditional school/federal holidays. We do not follow the Washington, DC or Maryland Public School schedule, as we are an independent program. We may be open on days when other school programs are not.

What fees and costs are associated with The Socratic School of Language?

One affordable monthly tuition is assessed every four weeks, regardless of the day a child is enrolled. Tuition is not pro-rated at any time. The tuition covers primarily everything we offer at The Socratic School of Language--so families get even more benefits by enrolling with us! Please ask about current tuition during your visit.  All families who enroll at The Socratic School Language do so with the understanding that tuition is due for services to be rendered at any time.

Do you offer financial aid?

We are not affiliated with public or charter schools or with any federal or state aid programs.

Does my child have to be potty-trained to be enrolled at The Socratic School of Language?

No, but we understand that "accidents” do happen! Let’s work together to build your child’s toileting independence in a manner that would be less frustrating to your child.

How diverse is The Socratic School of Language?

Here, our team make up shows that we are inclusive of EVERYBODY and encourage families from all regions, walks of life, and backgrounds to join us! The Socratic School of Language is an equal opportunity employer and educational program.

The number of boys and girls in attendance or who are enrolled is also very diverse, but is confidential information and we do not report on racial and other social demographics of our students/families because we feel they are not important--all children from all backgrounds need to learn and are welcomed here. We encourage invited prospective families to tour our program!

Is The Socratic School of Language equipped to work with exceptional children?

Though our staff has a desire to work with all children, at this time, we can best serve as a resource to assist you in finding a program that can best suit the needs of children who require more individualized attention.

What if my child has allergies?

No problem! We at The Socratic School of Language will ask you to note all known allergies on the appropriate enrollment forms and we will work with you and your child to ensure they are safe from things that can make them ill.

How often is cleaning done?

The Socratic School of Language is thoroughly cleaned throughout the day every day, which includes cleaning and sanitizing all materials and toys the children handle. Rugs and furniture are cleaned regularly and after spills and messes. Our cleaning products are effective in reducing the spread of germs and illnesses.

How does The Socratic School of Language deal with child discipline and guidance?

Here, we re-direct undesirable behavior, engage in positive modeling, and always speak with the children about what is acceptable and not acceptable ways to behave. Much of our daily curriculum will reinforce these habits, so that the children will have constant reminders of how they can positively get along with others. We believe in healthy conflict resolution with positive encouragement and parental involvement in this area is always key in how to handle behavior.
